California Gas Prices Hit Record:
Gas prices in California soared to record highs, shooting up 50 cents a gallon during the first week of October. The average price per gallon hit $4.67, with the worst spike on Friday (17 cents) followed by a 13 cent increase. One station in Menlo Park CA posted a $5.05 gallon price that day. The state’s environmental regulators agreed to allow refineries to start making a cheaper, winter blend of gasoline as soon as possible, which is expected to alleviate the shortages of the more expensive summer blend. (used during that period to guard against smog and air pollution rules.) Another cause of the higher price surge was blamed on a power outage Monday at a southern California refinery, which reduced supply in an already fragile and volatile market, and experts expect that prices will stabilize during the second week of October.
The state leapfrogged over Hawaii temporarily with the most expensive retail state price, and an average price of $ 4.49 on Friday. The current national average is $ 3.79 gallon for regular unleaded gasoline.
